Lotus seed mala

Thamarai mani mala (தாமரை மணி மாலை) is strung from natural lotus seeds. The seeds are dark, hard and smooth, and the mala is used for japa and worn in Lakshmi and Devi practice.

How it is used

For japa the beads are moved with the thumb and middle finger, the index finger traditionally kept away, and the meru bead is not crossed. A 54-bead mala is counted twice for a full round of 108. Practice varies by sampradaya — follow your own tradition.

About the material

Lotus seeds are natural, so size, shade and surface marking vary between beads, and the bead count within a strand may vary very slightly. The seeds darken and take on a sheen with handling over time.

108 is the full traditional count and is worn as well as used for japa. 54 is shorter and lighter; count it twice for a full round.

How do I care for it?
Keep it dry, remove it before bathing, and wipe with a dry cloth. Oiling lightly with sesame oil occasionally stops the seeds drying out.

Will the beads be identical?
No. They are natural seeds and vary in size and marking.

Can it be worn daily?
Yes, though most people keep a japa mala for practice and wear a separate one.
