Karungali (கருங்காலி), or black ebony, is the wood most associated in Tamil practice with protection. This bracelet is strung from turned Karungali beads on an adjustable thread, so it fits most wrists without resizing. It is worn daily by people who keep a regular prayer practice and want something less conspicuous than a full malai.

What you receive

  • 1 x Karungali bracelet
  • Material: black ebony wood
  • Colour: black
  • Bead size: 6mm, 8mm or 10mm, as selected
  • Adjustable thread — length can be enlarged

How it is worn

Wear it on either wrist. Practice varies by teacher and family tradition, so if your guru or sampradaya specifies a side or a day to begin, follow that. Many wearers put it on after their morning bath and remove it before bathing or swimming.

About the material

Ebony heartwood is dense and naturally black all the way through — the colour is the wood, not a coating. Grain, tone and weight vary slightly from bead to bead and from batch to batch, because every piece comes from a different part of the tree. That variation is a sign of genuine material rather than a defect. If you want to check what you receive, our guide on how to identify original Karungali walks through five tests you can do at home.

Questions

How do I know the wood is genuine?
Rub a bead firmly on a damp white cloth for ten seconds. Genuine ebony leaves no mark, because the black is the wood itself. Dyed wood transfers black onto the cloth.

Which bead size should I choose?
6mm sits lightest and suits smaller wrists and daily office wear. 10mm is noticeably heavier and more visible. 8mm is the most commonly chosen.

How do I care for it?
Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid soap, alcohol and perfume. Every few months rub in a trace of sesame or coconut oil and buff off the excess to preserve the lustre.

Can anyone wear it?
Yes. There is no restriction by age or gender in common practice. Where a family tradition specifies otherwise, follow your own custom.

Is Cash on Delivery available?
Yes, anywhere in India. You pay when the parcel reaches you.
