A Vinayagar idol carved from Karungali (கருங்காலி) — black ebony — the wood traditionally associated with protection in Tamil practice. It is kept in the pooja room, placed in the car, or given at housewarmings and festivals, where a wooden idol is often preferred over metal or plaster.

How it is used

Place it in the pooja room and worship as your family tradition prescribes. Smaller sizes are commonly kept on the car dashboard or in a showcase. Being wood rather than metal, it does not need abhishekam and should be kept away from water.

About the material

Ebony heartwood is dense, cool to the touch and black throughout — not stained or painted. Because each idol is carved by hand from a different piece of wood, the grain, exact proportions and finish differ between pieces. No two are identical. Which size should I choose?
2 inch suits a car dashboard or a small shelf. 3 inch is the usual choice for a home pooja room. 4 inch has the most presence and is the common gifting size.

How do I clean a wooden idol?
Dust it with a dry soft cloth. Do not wash it, do not perform abhishekam on it, and keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, which makes dense wood crack.

Can I apply oil to it?
A trace of pure sesame or coconut oil buffed in every few months preserves the finish. Avoid scented or chemical oils.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?
Close, but not identical. Each piece is hand-carved, so posture, grain and finish vary a little. We photograph a representative piece.

Is it suitable as a housewarming gift?
