Black turmeric | Karumanjal

Black turmeric (கறுமஞ்சள்), also called Kali Haldi, is a distinct rhizome from ordinary turmeric — darker, with a stronger and more resinous aroma. It is used in Tamil households in pooja and in traditional external preparations.

About the material

This is a natural agricultural product. Size, shape, inner colour and aroma vary between pieces and between harvests. The solid form keeps longer than the powder.

Solid or powder — which should I choose?
Solid rhizome keeps far longer and can be ground as needed. Powder is more convenient but loses aroma faster once opened.

How is it different from ordinary turmeric?
It is a different rhizome, with a much darker interior and a stronger, more resinous smell. It is not a substitute for cooking turmeric and is not sold as food.

How should I store it?
In an airtight container, dry and away from sunlight. Damp will spoil both forms, and the powder faster.

Can it be eaten?
No. This is sold for external and ritual use only.
