Goddess Lakshmi face idols

The Lakshmi face, or Lakshmi mukham, is the moulded face fixed to the kalasam during Varalakshmi Vratham and other Lakshmi observances, turning the pot into the form of the goddess. It is also kept as a standalone piece in the pooja room.

Choosing a size

The size should be matched to the pot you are using, not chosen on its own. Measure the width of your kalasam at the shoulder and pick a face that sits proportionately — a face much wider than the pot will not seat properly. 4 to 6 inches suits a standard home kalasam; the larger sizes are for bigger pots and for temple use.

How it is used

During Varalakshmi Vratham the kalasam is prepared, decorated and the face fixed to the front, then dressed with saree, jewellery and flowers. Practice differs between families and regions — the arrangement, the order of decoration and the day itself all vary. Follow your own household custom.

About the finish

Moulded and finished by hand, so colour depth and detailing vary slightly between pieces. Small differences from the photograph are normal.

Measure the widest part of the pot and choose a face that sits comfortably within it. If you are between sizes, take the smaller one — an oversized face does not seat well.

Does it come with the pot or the jewellery?
No, this is the face only. The kalasam, saree and jewellery are separate.

How do I fix it to the pot?
Most households seat it on the rice or grain filling the pot and secure it with the saree as it is draped. Methods vary; follow the way your family does it.

How should I store it between years?
Wrapped in soft cloth or newspaper, in a dry place. Do not wash it — water damages the finish.
