Homam Pooja Kit

A homam (ஓமம்) needs a long list of items, and the usual problem is discovering on the morning of the ritual that one of them is missing. This kit gathers them into a single box, in three sizes, so the shopping is done in one order rather than four.

How it is used

Homam is performed with a priest, who will specify the sequence and the mantras. What differs most between households is the item list: requirements vary considerably by the type of homam, by sampradaya and by region. Before ordering, it is worth sending your priest the item photograph so they can tell you whether anything specific to your ritual needs adding.

About the contents

These are natural agricultural and forest products — wood, resins, powders and dried material. Colour, aroma and exact appearance vary with the season and the batch. Quantities are measured by weight rather than by count.

Which size do I need?
It depends on the scale of the homam and the number of participants, not on the type. Ask your priest how many aahutis are planned and check that against the quantities shown in the item photograph.

Does this include everything?
It includes the items shown in the product images. Some homams call for additional specific materials, and ghee and fresh items are not included. Confirm the list with your priest first.

How should I store it before the ritual?
Keep the box closed, dry and away from direct sunlight. The resins and powders keep well for months if they are not exposed to damp.

How far ahead should I order?
Two weeks before the ritual date. Delivery normally takes 4–8 working days, and that leaves room for delays.
