Karungali kol, or karungali kattai, is a plain turned piece of black ebony — no carving, no image, just the wood. It is held during prayer, carried in a pocket or bag, or kept in the pooja room. In Tamil tradition karungali is associated with protection, and the plain stick is the simplest form in which it is kept.

About the material

Ebony heartwood is dense, cool to the touch and black all the way through rather than stained. A piece this small should still feel surprisingly heavy for its size — that density is one of the more reliable signs of genuine ebony, and a plain stick is the easiest form on which to check it. Questions

How do I check the wood is genuine?
Rub it firmly on a damp white cloth. Real ebony leaves no mark, because the black is the wood itself. Dyed wood transfers black onto the cloth.

Which size should I choose?
2.5 inches sits more easily in a pocket; 3 inches is easier to hold in the hand during prayer.

How do I care for it?
Wipe with a dry cloth. Keep it dry, and away from heat and direct sunlight, which make dense wood crack. A trace of sesame or coconut oil every few months preserves the finish.

Can it be carried every day?
Yes, that is one of the common uses. It will darken and take on a sheen with handling.
