A Varahi Amman (வாராகி அம்மன்) idol carved from Karungali (கருங்காலி) — black ebony. Varahi is worshipped particularly in Tamil Nadu as a protective form of the Devi, and a Karungali idol is often preferred for her over metal or stone.

How it is used

Kept in the pooja room and worshipped as your family tradition prescribes. Smaller ebony idols are also placed in the car or in a showcase. Being wood, it should not be given abhishekam and should be kept away from water.

About the material

Ebony heartwood is dense, cool to the touch and black throughout rather than stained. At 4 inches and 150 grams this piece will feel noticeably heavier than a wooden idol of the same size in ordinary timber — that weight is one of the more reliable signs of genuine ebony. How do I clean a wooden idol?
Dust with a dry soft cloth. Do not wash it and do not perform abhishekam on it. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, which makes dense wood crack.

Can I apply oil?
A trace of pure sesame or coconut oil buffed in every few months preserves the finish. Avoid scented or chemical oils.

Will it match the photograph exactly?
No — each idol is hand-carved, so posture, proportion and grain vary. We photograph a representative piece.

How do I know it is genuine ebony?
Weight is the quickest check: 150 grams for a 4 inch idol is dense. The unfinished base shows the raw wood, which should be black through rather than pale under a dark surface.
