Darbha, or kusha grass (தர்ப்பை), is the grass used across Hindu ritual — in homam, in shraddha ceremonies, in griha pravesh, and worn as the pavithram ring. This is darbha twisted into rope, supplied by length.

How it is used

Used to mark and enclose the ritual space, tied around the mandapam or the kalasam, and cut to length for specific purposes as the priest directs. Requirements vary considerably by ritual and by sampradaya — ask your priest what length you need before ordering.

About the material

Natural grass, twisted by hand. Colour, thickness and texture vary with the harvest, and the rope becomes brittle if it dries out completely. It is normal for the colour to be uneven along the length.

Which length do I need?
That depends on the ritual and the size of the space. Your priest will tell you — 30 feet covers most home ceremonies, 60 feet is for larger functions.

How should I store it?
Coiled, in a dry place but not in direct heat. Grass rope that dries out completely becomes brittle and snaps.

Can it be reused?
Practice differs. Many traditions treat darbha used in a ritual as not to be reused; follow what your priest says.

Why is the colour uneven?
It is a natural grass, harvested and dried in batches. Uneven colour along the length is normal.
