How it is used

Place the idol in the pooja room and light the diyas during the pooja. At the end of the observance the idol is immersed in water, where it breaks down entirely. Many families do this at home in a bucket or drum and then pour the water onto plants, which is only possible because nothing in the idol is synthetic.

About the material

Panchagavya is the five products of the cow — dung, urine, milk, curd and ghee. Because each idol is shaped and dried by hand from natural material, the colour, shape, finish, shine and weight vary from piece to piece and will differ somewhat from the photograph. The diyas burn fully and leave no residue.

Why choose panchagavya over a painted idol?
Painted plaster idols do not break down in water and carry pigment into tanks and lakes. A panchagavya idol dissolves completely, which is why many households and residents' associations now prefer it.

Does it have a smell?
A faint earthy smell when new, which fades. It is not unpleasant and does not linger in the room.

How do I store it before the festival?
Keep it dry and out of humid places. Panchagavya absorbs moisture, so do not store it in a bathroom or an unventilated cupboard during monsoon.

Can I immerse it at home?
Yes. A bucket or drum of water is enough, and the water can afterwards be used for plants.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?
Close, but each idol is handmade, so colour and finish vary a little between pieces.
