Red sandalwood mala

Red sandalwood — rakta chandan or lal chandan — is a different timber from the pale fragrant sandalwood, deep red in colour and almost scentless. It is used for japa and worn, particularly in Devi and Hanuman practice.

What you receive

• 1 x red sandalwood mala
• Material: red sandalwood
• Colour: red
• Bead size: 9mm
• Length: 1 foot

How it is used

Used for japa and worn. The beads are moved with the thumb and middle finger, the index finger traditionally kept away. Which mala suits which practice is a matter of tradition and of what your guru or family follows.

About the material

Red sandalwood is naturally deep red and, unlike white sandalwood, has almost no fragrance — a scentless red mala is correct rather than a sign of poor quality. Colour depth and grain vary between beads, and the wood darkens with handling over time.

Questions

Why does it not smell like sandalwood?
Because it is a different tree. Red sandalwood is prized for its colour, not its scent, and is naturally almost odourless.

How is it different from white sandalwood?
Different species, different colour, and no fragrance. They are used in different practices; neither substitutes for the other.

Will the colour run?
Red sandalwood can leave a faint tint on damp skin or light cloth when new. Keep it dry and this settles.

How do I care for it?
Wipe with a dry cloth, keep dry, and store out of direct sunlight.

Is Cash on Delivery available?
Yes, anywhere in India.
