Rudraksha (ருத்ராட்சம்) is the seed most closely associated with Shiva worship and with japa. This malai is strung with 108 beads and is used both for counting mantras and for daily wear.

What you receive

  • 1 x Rudraksha malai
  • Material: rudraksha seed
  • Colour: brown
  • Number of beads: 108
  • Mukhi (faces): 5 mukhi
  • Bead size: 6mm to 20mm, as selected
  • Indonesian rudraksha beads

How it is used

For japa the beads are moved with the thumb and middle finger, the index finger traditionally kept away, and the meru bead is not crossed — the mala is turned around when you reach it. Five mukhi is the most widely used face count for general japa and is considered suitable for most people without specific astrological consultation. Practice varies by sampradaya; where your family or guru specifies otherwise, follow that.

About the material

Rudraksha is a natural seed. Size, colour depth, surface texture and the exact pattern of the mukhi lines vary between beads, and beads darken with wear as they take up oil from the skin. A mala of perfectly identical beads is more likely to be machine-made than exceptional. Please note that the bead size range is wide — a 20mm bead is very substantially larger and heavier than a 6mm one, so choose carefully.

Questions

What does 5 mukhi mean?
Mukhi means face — the natural vertical clefts running down the seed. A 5 mukhi bead has five. It is the most common and most widely worn variety, and is traditionally regarded as suitable for general use.

Which bead size should I pick?
6mm to 8mm suits daily wear under clothing. 10mm to 12mm is the usual choice for japa. Above 14mm the mala becomes a substantial piece, worn more visibly and less often.

How do I care for it?
Keep it dry, remove it before bathing and swimming, and wipe it with a dry cloth. Oiling lightly with sesame oil once every few months keeps the seeds from drying and cracking.

Can anyone wear rudraksha?
In common practice there is no restriction by age or gender. Some families observe their own rules about when it is worn or removed; follow your own custom.

Is Cash on Delivery available?
