How it is used

The irumudi is the two-compartment bundle carried on the head to Sabarimala, holding the offerings in the front section and the devotee's own provisions behind. It is filled and tied at the kettunira ceremony, which is performed with a guruswami rather than alone.

The malai is traditionally worn from the start of the 41-day vratham. The dhotis, towels and shoulder bag are for the yatra itself. Practice differs between guruswamis and between families — follow the guidance of whoever is leading your group.

About the materials

Cotton, in the black associated with the vratham. Shade and weave vary slightly between batches, as they do with any cotton.

Does this include everything for the yatra?
It covers the cloth items and the malai. The offerings that go inside the irumudi — ghee-filled coconut, rice, and the rest — are gathered separately at the kettunira, as your guruswami directs.

When should I start wearing the malai?
Traditionally at the start of the 41-day vratham, in a ceremony conducted by a guruswami. Follow your group's practice.

Is the irumudi already filled?
No, and it should not be. It is filled and tied at the kettunira ceremony, not beforehand.

What size are the dhotis?
Standard adult size. If you need a specific length, message us before ordering.

How far ahead should I order?
Before the vratham starts, so nothing is being chased in the last week. Season demand is heavy.
