Sandalwood mala | Chandan mala

Chandan mala (சந்தன மாலை) is strung from sandalwood beads. It is light in the hand and carries the characteristic sandalwood scent, which is why it is often chosen for japa over denser materials.

What you receive

• 1 x sandalwood mala
• Material: sandalwood
• Colour: brown
• Bead size: 9mm
• Length: 1 foot

How it is used

Used for japa and worn. The beads are moved with the thumb and middle finger, the index finger traditionally kept away. Practice varies by sampradaya; follow your own tradition.

About the material

Sandalwood is a natural material — grain, tone and the strength of the scent vary between beads and between batches. The fragrance is strongest when the mala is new and softens over time; rubbing the beads warms them and brings the scent forward again.

Questions

Does the scent last?
It softens over months rather than disappearing. Warming the beads between the fingers brings it forward.

How do I care for it?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep it dry and out of direct sunlight. Do not wash it — water dulls both the wood and the scent.

Can it be worn daily?
Yes. Remove it before bathing and heavy work.

Is the wood natural?
Yes. Grain and colour vary bead to bead, which is what you would expect from natural sandalwood.

Is Cash on Delivery available?
Yes, anywhere in India.
