Chandan powder | Sandalwood powder

Chandan (சந்தனம்) is used in daily pooja — made into a paste with water, offered to the deity, and applied as tilak on the idols and on the forehead. It is one of the items most households go through steadily rather than occasionally.

Which form to choose

• Powder — the most convenient. Mix with a few drops of water to a smooth paste as you need it.
• Tablet — pressed into a cake, ground on a wet stone in the traditional way. More effort, and preferred by households that keep to the older method.
• Ball — similar to the tablet, in a rounded form.

How it is used

Make only as much paste as you need for that pooja — chandan paste does not keep and will sour if left overnight. Apply to the idol and as tilak. The scent is at its strongest immediately after mixing.

About the material

Natural material, so colour and the strength of the aroma vary between batches. Chandan absorbs moisture readily; keep the main pack sealed and decant a small working quantity.

How do I make the paste?
Add water a few drops at a time to the powder and work it to a smooth paste. For tablet or ball, grind on a wet stone. Make only what you will use that day.

How should I store it?
Airtight, dry, away from heat and sunlight. Moisture is what spoils chandan and dulls the aroma.

Can I use it on my skin?
This is supplied for pooja use. It is not sold or tested as a cosmetic product.
