Spadika Nandhi

Nandi is the vahana of Shiva, and is placed facing the lingam — head lowered, feet folded, tail tucked in. This one is carved from sphatik (ஸ்படிகம்), natural clear quartz, and is usually bought to accompany a sphatik Shivalingam.

How it is used

Placed in front of the Shivalingam, facing it, in the arrangement followed in Shiva temples. Practice varies between households as to distance and orientation; follow your own custom. Sphatik can be given abhishekam, but dry it thoroughly afterwards.

Choosing a weight

Match the Nandi to your lingam rather than choosing independently — the two are seen together. A Nandi of the same weight grade as the lingam, or one grade smaller, usually looks right.

About the material

Natural quartz, carved by hand. Clarity, veiling and small inclusions vary between pieces, and the carving detail differs slightly from one to the next. Faint internal marking is normal in natural stone and helps distinguish it from moulded glass.

Which weight should I choose for my lingam?
The same grade as your lingam, or one grade smaller. A Nandi larger than the lingam looks out of proportion.

Where should it be placed?
In front of the lingam, facing it. Exact positioning varies by household custom.

Can I do abhishekam on it?
Yes. Dry it thoroughly afterwards, particularly after milk.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?
Close, but each piece is hand-carved from natural stone, so clarity and detail vary.
