A Shivalingam carved from sphatik (ஸ்படிகம்) — natural clear quartz. Sphatik is the stone traditionally chosen for the lingam where a clear rather than a dark stone is wanted, and it is worshipped in that form in many Tamil households.

How it is used

Kept in the pooja room and worshipped as your family tradition prescribes. Unlike a wooden idol, sphatik can be given abhishekam with water or milk — dry it thoroughly afterwards, particularly if milk has been used. Many households pair it with a Nandi facing the lingam.

Choosing a weight

Sizes here are given by weight rather than by height, which is the usual convention for stone pieces. 25g is small enough for a travel altar or a car; 50g and 75g are the common home pooja room choices; 100g is the most substantial.

About the material

Natural quartz. Clarity, internal veiling, small inclusions and faint cloudiness vary from piece to piece, and a completely flawless stone is uncommon in natural material — inclusions are a sign the stone is quartz rather than glass. Weight is approximate to the stated grade.

Can I do abhishekam on it?
Yes, sphatik takes water and milk. Dry it thoroughly afterwards, especially after milk, which will otherwise leave a film.

Will it be perfectly clear?
Natural quartz usually carries faint veiling or small inclusions. Perfectly clear, bubble-free pieces are more likely to be glass than quartz.

How do I clean it?
Rinse in plain water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid soap and harsh cleaners.

Which weight should I choose?
50g to 75g suits most home pooja rooms. 25g is for a small or travelling altar; 100g where you want more presence.
