Thombai

Thombai (தொம்பை) are the cylindrical cloth hangings seen flanking the deity on the temple chariot and at the entrance during utsavam. They are made by applique — shapes cut from coloured cloth and stitched onto a base — which is why the swans, elephants and flowers on them stand slightly proud of the surface.

How they are used

Hung in pairs — on either side of the deity, the chariot, or the entrance to the mandapam. At home they are used for golu, for festival decoration and for functions. They are sold as a pair because they are almost always used symmetrically.

Choosing a height

1 to 2 feet suits a home pooja room or a golu display. 3 feet is the common choice for a doorway or a home function. 4 and 5 feet are for temples, chariots and large mandapams.

About the work

Applique is hand-stitched, so the motifs, colour combinations and finish vary between pairs and will differ from the photograph. Small irregularities in the stitching are characteristic of handwork rather than defects.

How do I clean them?
Dust or brush gently. Do not machine wash — applique stitching and trim will not survive it. Spot-clean if needed.

How should I store them between festivals?
Rolled rather than folded, in a dry place away from sunlight. Folding creases the applique.
