Karungali thirisoolam

The thirisoolam (திரிசூலம்) or trishul is the three-pointed weapon of Shiva, kept and worshipped in home and temple poojas. Where the Vel of Murugan has a single head, the trishul has three — traditionally read as past, present and future. This one is carved from Karungali (கருங்காலி), black ebony.

How it is used

Kept in the pooja room and worshipped alongside the lingam or as your family tradition prescribes. It is also used in Amman and Bhairava worship. Being wood, it should be kept dry and not given abhishekam.

Choosing a size

6 inches suits a home pooja shelf. 9 inches has more presence and is the usual choice where the trishul is a main object of worship rather than an accompaniment.

About the material

Ebony heartwood is dense, cool to the touch and black throughout rather than stained. Because each trishul is carved by hand, the taper of the three heads, the grain and the finish differ between pieces. Our guide on identifying original Karungali explains what to check.

Are the points sharp?
They are shaped rather than sharpened, but the 9 inch piece has defined points. Keep it out of reach of small children.

How do I care for it?
Dust with a dry cloth. Do not wash it or perform abhishekam. Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight.

Can I apply oil?
A trace of pure sesame or coconut oil every few months preserves the finish. Avoid scented or chemical oils.

Will it match the photograph?
Closely, but each piece is hand-carved so proportions and grain vary a little.
