Vagamalai

Vagamalai (வாகை மாலை) takes its name from vaagai, victory, and malai, garland. It is a cloth garland made by applique work, used to decorate idols where a garland is wanted that will last through the festival and into following years, rather than a day.

How it is used

Draped on the idol in the same way as a flower garland. It is commonly used during Varalakshmi Vratham on the kalasam, at golu, and for functions where fresh flowers would wilt over a long day. Being cloth, it can be kept and reused each year.

Choosing a size

Match the garland to the idol rather than to the shelf. 1 foot suits a small deity or a kalasam; 2 feet is for larger idols. If you are between sizes, the smaller usually drapes better.

About the work

Applique is hand-stitched, so colour combinations, motifs and finish vary between pairs and will not match the photograph exactly. Because the colours are cloth rather than dye, they hold well over years if stored properly.
