Jilledu ganesh statue

Jilledu Ganesh, also called Erukku Vinayagar (எருக்கு விநாயகர்), is carved from the wood of the jilledu or erukku plant — the calotropis. It is pale, light in the hand, and quite different in character from a dark ebony or a metal idol. In tradition the wood is associated with the Moon.

How it is used

Placed in the pooja room and worshipped as your family tradition prescribes. It is also given at housewarmings and functions. Being a soft, light wood it should be kept dry — do not wash it or perform abhishekam on it.

Choosing a size

2.5 to 3 inches suits a small shelf or a travel altar. 4.5 inches is the usual home pooja room size. 6 and 8 inches have more presence and are the common gifting choices.

About the material

Jilledu is a light, pale wood, so these idols weigh considerably less than an equivalent ebony or stone piece — that lightness is characteristic and not a sign of poor quality. Grain, tone and carving detail differ between pieces, and the wood may darken slightly with age.

How do I clean it?
Remove dust with a dry cloth. Do not wash it with water — jilledu is a soft wood and water damages it.

Why is it so light?
Jilledu is naturally a light, low-density wood. An idol of this size in ebony would weigh several times more. Lightness is normal here.

Can I perform abhishekam on it?
No. Keep it dry. For abhishekam a stone or metal idol is the appropriate choice.

Will it look exactly like the photograph?
Close, but each idol is hand-carved, so grain and proportions vary between pieces.
